I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to share my transformative journey with Let’s Make A Difference (LMAD). Reflecting on my past, I realised how profoundly this organisation has shaped my life, guiding me toward self-discovery, discipline, and purpose.
Early Life:
I was born and raised in a slum in Gaddigodam, Nagpur, Maharashtra, India. During my teenage years, I developed bad habits such as smoking beedis and stealing, which eventually became an addiction. However, after attending a church prayer session, I had a moment of realisation and decided to leave those habits behind.
My mother sold tea on the streets, and my father worked as a painter in an automobile company. Despite these hardships, I was fortunate to receive an education in a Hindi-medium school until the 10th standard. While preparing for my board exams, I realised the importance of an English-medium education and decided to make the switch after completing my 10th grade.
Growing up in a basti(slums), I was always surrounded by community functions and events. I was constantly drawn to good food and enjoyed helping serve meals at weddings and gatherings. This experience sparked my passion for food and hospitality, leading me to pursue a career in hotel management. However, my environment lacked proper guidance, moral values, and direction. Surrounded by negative influences, I struggled with abusive language, dishonesty, and fightings, with no clear goals for my future. Though my parents were not educated, I was determined to break the cycle and build a better life. I successfully completed my 11th and 12th grades in English-medium education an achievement that brought me immense joy. Although I was not academically strong, I managed to push through and, over time, my passion for hospitality turned into a profession. I completed my hotel management studies and began working as a waiter.
Encounter with LMAD:
My life took a pivotal turn when my friend Harshal introduced me to LMAD youth conference. Through sponsorship, I was able to attend the LMAD Youth Conference, where I met young minds from across globe. My first conference in 2014 at Asia Plateau, Panchgani, was a life-changing experience.
This new environment and exposure were completely different from my past, making it difficult for me to adapt. However, the sessions on self-introspection, honesty, purity, unselfishness, and unconditional love were eye-opening. Slowly, these teachings started impacting my heart and mind, making me aware of the negative impact my past behaviors had on my life and relationships. I began to understand the importance of values, humanity, and self-discipline, motivating me to make a conscious effort to change.
Transformation Through LMAD:
LMAD became a continuous journey of self-evolution for me. The organization’s emphasis on becoming a better human being resonated deeply. I adopted new habits such as waking up early, practicing quiet reflection, reading, doing yoga, meeting new people, and respecting others. These changes instilled discipline, improved my communication skills, and refined my character.
Determined to be more involved with LMAD, I started reaching out to Viral Bhai for permission to participate in other conferences. Over time, I attended various LMAD conferences across India, including Ayikudy (Tamil Nadu), DMRC (Delhi), Ankleshwar (Gujarat), Juvenile Observation Home, Tamar & Jamshedpur (Jharkhand), Haridwar & Rishikesh, and Fellow Homes (Delhi). These experiences broadened my perspective and connected me with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Through LMAD, I learned invaluable lessons about moral values, accountability, and community service. Over time, I improved my anger management, time management, and organisational skills, which helped me grow both personally and professionally.
Current Endeavours:
Today, I am working in Australia as a Restaurant Manager in the hospitality industry, carrying with me the lessons I learned from LMAD. To date, I have positively impacted the lives of over a thousand individuals through conferences, group discussions, fellowship talks, and events. The foundation laid by LMAD continues to guide my actions, keeping me grounded, disciplined, and committed to lifelong learning and service.
Conclusion:
LMAD has played a crucial role in my transformation from a directionless youth to a purpose-driven individual. The journey has been challenging yet rewarding, and I am committed to upholding the values instilled in me as I continue navigating life’s endeavors. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to LMAD for being the beacon of light that guided me toward becoming a better version of myself.
With gratitude,
Ashwin
